Concrete recycling is becoming an increasingly popular way to utilize aggregate left behind when structures or roadways are demolished. In the past, this rubble was disposed of in landfills, but with more attention being paid to environmental concerns, concrete recycling allows reuse of the rubble while also keeping construction costs down.

The concrete recycling process involves some fairly large machinery.

Sometimes, however, virgin aggregate is combined with recycled, crushed concrete for making new concrete. Large pieces of crushed concrete can be used for control of erosion, and finely ground concrete can sometimes be used as landscaping stone. Retaining walls and privacy fences can be made from stacked cages filled with crushed concrete. Disposing of concrete in a landfill is becoming expensive enough to encourage recycling efforts. Additionally, the use of recycled crushed concrete as aggregate on-site can save 50 to 60% over the costs of using new aggregate.

Designed as a 3Mt/y operation, the Fording River has the mineral type of low- to high-volatile bituminous a coals. Coal Mill, Operations, Beneficiation

For coal mill, you have several types to choose. Ball mill is widely used in cement industry. There are two types: wet ball mill and dry ball mill. About Coal Beneficiation: Three kinds of processes may be performed at the plants:

(1) sizing, controlled by a crushing and screening process,
(2) increasing heating value, by removing noncombustible ash and rock by gravity separation,
(3) removing or controlling undesirable mineral and chemical components (sulfur, sodium, and trace elements) by a combination of gravity separation and blending. Traditionally, most coal preparation was primarily concerned with sulfur and ash reduction. Today, however, much more sophisticated processes have more narrow and complex physical and chemical requirements for coal stock.

Copper Ore Concentrate

The sulfide ores are beneficiated in flotation cells, while the oxide ores are generally leached. First the copper ore from a open pit mine is blasted, loaded and transported to the primary crushers. Then the ore is crushed and screened, with the fine sulfide ore (~-0.5 mm) going to froth flotation cells for recovery of copper. The coarser ore goes to the heap leach, where the copper is subjected to a dilute sulfuric acid solution to dissolve the copper. Then the leach solution containing the dissolved copper is subjected to a process called solvent extraction (SX). The SX process concentrates and purifies the copper leach solution so the copper can be recovered at a high electrical current efficiency by the electrowinning cells. It does this by adding a chemical reagent to the SX tanks which selectively binds with and extracts the copper, is easily separated from the copper.

The xanthates are added to the slurry in relatively small quantities. Xanthate is a long hydrocarbon (5 carbons) chain molecule. One end of the chain (the ionic dithiocarbonate) is polar and sticks to copper ore flotation sulfide minerals while the other end is nonpolar, containing the hydrocarbon chain is hydrophobic -- it hates being in the water and is attracted to the nonpolar hydrocarbon pine oil molecules.

Most of the world's production of chromite (95%) is used in the metallurgical industry in the form of ferrochromium alloys. The alloys are produced by high temperature reduction (smelting) of chromite. They are essentially alloys of iron and chromium with much lesser amounts of carbon and silicon, the amounts depending upon the grade or type of alloy, and impurities such as sulphur, phosphorous and titanium. The conversion of chromite to ferrochromium alloys is dominated by electric submerged arc furnace smelting with carbonaceous reductants, predominantly coke, and fluxes to form the correct slag composition. The electric current is 3-phase Alternating Current (AC) and the furnaces have three equally spaced consumable graphite electrodes in a cylindrical, refractory-lined container with a bottom tap-hole.

Chromium Ore Flotation

A more advanced attempt to overcome the problem of ore fines was the introduction of DC arc, or plasma, furnace technology. The DC arc furnace uses a single, central hollow graphite electrode as the cathode, with an electrically conducting refractory furnace hearth as the anode. The furnace operates with an open bath, so there is no problem with overburden, and the chromite fines, together with coal and fluxes, are fed directly into the bath through the hollow electrode. The furnace has a closed top. Some of the advantages of DC arc furnace operation are: use of fine ores without agglomeration, use of cheaper reductants and greater choice of reductants, higher chromium ore flotation recoveries, deliberate changes in the charge composition are reflected rapidly in the slag or metal, and closed top operation allows furnace off-gas energy to be used. .
